Day by day...

Anxiety happens when you think you have to figure out everything all at once. Breathe. You’re strong. You got this. Take it day by day.

— Karen Salmansohn (Best selling self-help book author with over one million books sold. Salmansohn was formerly a senior VP ad creative director who left her job to pursue writing. She succeeded wildly; profiled in NY Times, Time Magazine and Business week, regular lifestyle reporter for Fox, has her own Sirius radio show called Be Happy Dammit, gives seminars nationally and internationally, regular columnist for Oprah, CNN, Huffington Post and MSN to name a few of her many accomplishments).

Eckhart Tolle offers similar advice (remain in the moment, with the task at hand, as much as possible) in The Power of Now. I find I have to keep reminding myself of this. Just sayin’ ;) Hugs.

Calm in your heart...

Peace.
It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble or hard work. It means to be in the midst of those things and still be calm in your heart.

— Unknown

Achieving peace appears to be a work in progress, considering deeply rooted family issues, job stress or loss, financial pressures, relationship break downs and the like. Just sayin’ ;) Hugs.

Love ourselves...

The biggest struggle in life is the struggle to know, embrace, and accept ourselves with all of our faults and imperfections... Let us learn to love ourselves so we can be more open and compassionate to others, and so we can take down the walls that limit who we can be and what we can contribute.

— Melanie Greenberg (The 50 Best Quotes on Self-Love, Psychology Today)

Said another way...

My willingness to be intimate with my own deep feelings creates the space for intimacy with another.

— Shakti Gawain (New Age and personal development author, whose books have sold over 10 million copies. Gawain is best known for her book Creative Visualization: Use The Power of Your Imagination to Create What You Want in Life, which has been a bestselling book for nearly 40 years).

My favourite therapist says we need to feel what we’re feeling, without rejecting the darker emotions. He says the non-happy feelings are where the most important information and opportunity for self-guidance is. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

When emotion arises...

Emotion arises at the place where mind and body meet. It is the body’s reaction to your mind — or you might say, a reflection of your mind in the body.

— Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

My favourite therapist says we should check in with what we feel in our body for a reality check. He says our body will let us know if something “feels” right or not and whether or not we should take action. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

From inner stillness...

All true artists, whether they know it or not, create from a place of no-mind, from inner stillness.

— Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

I find I need a lot of reminders on this front. It’s easy to get stuck in the spiral of stress or worry. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

The things that truly matter...

All the things that truly matter — beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace — arise from beyond the mind.

— Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now, page 14)

My favourite therapist says it’s our ego that can be so ruthless and wants bigger, better, more. He says we’re more than that. We have an “Inner Child” and “Spirit or Higher Power within” that can draw us closer to our heart, soul and those we care about. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

Using the mind...

The mind is a superb instrument if used rightly. Used wrongly, however, it becomes very destructive. To put it more accurately, it is not so much that you use your mind wrongly — you usually don’t use it at all. It uses you.

— Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

My favourite therapists says our mind (particularly the ego) is there to aid and protect us, but we need to observe our thoughts carefully. He says we have other resources that may be even more powerful. If you’re curious to know more, check out Joel Brass and his teachings. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

Who am I?

What a liberation to realize that the “voice in my head” is not who I am. Who am I then? The one who sees that.

— Eckhart Tolle (Author of A New Earth and The Power of Now)

We’re not supposed to believe every thought our brain has. According to researchers, we still have a very primitive, survival-based brain that’s hard-wired to sniff out trouble. This creates a lot of unnecessary fear and stress. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

There is pain...

Where there is anger, there is always pain.

— Eckhart Tolle (Author of A New Earth and The Power of Now)

My father was a pretty angry guy (RIP Dad. I love you). I wish I could have talked to him about what ailed him do deeply. Just sayin’ :) Hugs. XO

Go for it...

Go for it. Whether it ends good or bad, it was an experience.

— Unknown

Ekhart Tolle talks a lot about resisting the urge to name and label our experiences and feelings. He says labels “block true experience and connection with other people. The ego mind keeps us engaged at the level of physical appearance and form, which means it prevents us from experiencing life, ourselves and others directly, in their fullness and magnificence and aliveness.” He also says “All the things that truly matter — beauty, love, creativity, joy, inner peace — arise from beyond the mind. I find I have to remind myself of these things. It’s easy to get caught up in disappointment, frustration or wanting more. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

Action steps...

When it is obvious that goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, but adjust the action steps.

— Confucius

I guess it all depends on the intensity of our desire/ambition? If our interest wanes, perhaps there’s something else for us? I’ve tried changing course more than a couple of times and realized, nope. Then back on track. My life has involved much trial and error. Just sayin’ :)

Feel the feelings...

Feel the feeling but don’t become the emotion. Witness it. Allow it. Release it.

— Crystal Andrus (Best selling author, motivational speaker, woman’s advocate, health and fitness expert. Andrus is the nutritionist on the international hit TV show X-Weighted).

My favourite therapist says “you can’t heal what you can’t feel.” In my experience, it’s not so easy tackling this stuff alone. It’s a forest for the trees situation, where we’re too close to our issues and they typically have very deep roots. A little guidance can go a long way. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

The cost of repression...

Feelings have never killed anybody. Repressing them have caused many to lose their lives.

— Unknown

My favourite therapist says “the only way out is the way in.” He says that our instinct is to deny, try to forget, tune out, drown out, avoid our old and painful feelings, but we need to go toward them and resolve them once and for all. He says the issue is that we did not understand or know how to process our feelings when we were kids and so the feelings remain stuck... unless and until we are willing to go in and deal with them. In my experience, the “work” was not fun, quick, easy or cheap, but on the other side truly was a pot of gold in every way. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

Nothing personal...

Agreement 2:
Don’t take anything personally

Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

— Don Miguel Ruiz, The Four Agreements

My favourite therapist says we have to address our own issues, in order to reduce the likelihood of being “triggered.” Thing is, even if something isn’t personal, it may strike a chord because of old wounds. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

You are enough...

Quiet the voice

Telling you to do more and be more, and trust that in this moment, who you are, where you are at, and what you are doing is enough. You will get to where you need to be in your own time. Until then, breathe. Breath and be patient with yourself and your process. You are doing the best you can to cope and survive amid your struggles, and that’s all you can ask of yourself. It’s enough. You are enough.

— Unknown

My favourite therapist says because we cannot change our legacy (where we were born, what our childhood was like, etc.), we should simply aim to manage our “stuff” better. He says we can expect to be triggered, unfortunately, but hopefully we can learned to observe how we’re feeling with a little bit of distance and be less “charged” by the old wounds. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

Healthy detachment...

Detachment

Doesn’t mean not caring. It’s taking care of yourself first and letting others take responsibility for their actions without trying to save or punish them.

— Unknown

I struggle with this at times. I will continue striving however, as I crave the inner peace that detachment promises. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

Our minds...

Our greatest battles are that with our own minds.

— Jameson Frank

Do I eat what is soooo yummy, but upsets my stomach? Do I keep drinking even though I’m going to pay for it tomorrow? Do I clean my house or lose myself in Game of Thrones? Do I save some of my paycheque or go out for dinner? I don’t know about you, but there are enough challenges “out there” that sometimes you just gotta indulge in the moment and enjoy a few creature comforts. On the other hand, post-Christmas, it can also feel good to pursue a little progress and clean living. Let’s gear up. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

Stronger, richer, smarter?...

There is nothing outside of yourself that can ever enable you to get stronger, richer, quicker or smarter. Everything is within. Everything exists. Seek nothing outside of yourself.

— Miyamoto Musashi (Japanese philosopher, writer, swordsman and ronin. Musashi is one of the most skilled swordsmen in history and his teachings have been immortalized in his book The Book of Five Rings. He spent many years studying Buddhism and was also an accomplished artist, sculptor and calligrapher).

In the spirit of New Year’s resolutions....

Many wise people (across varied disciplines) concur. They say all change begins with us, how we think, what we think, what we can act on and what we are able to dedicate ourselves to. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

From multiple failures to mega success...

People who found success despite failures:

12 times: J.K. Rowling was famously rejected by a mighty 12 publishers before Harry Potter and The Philospher’s Stone was accepted.

302 times: Legend has it Walt Disney was turned down 302 times before he got financing for creating Disneyland.

104 times: Albert Einstein didn’t speak until he was four and didn’t read until he was seven. He went on to win a Nobel Prize and become the face of modern physics.

Sold 1 painting: Vincent Van Goh only sold one painting in his lifetime - - to a friend. Despite that, he kept painting and finished over 800 pieces. His most expensive painting today is valued at $142.7 million.

27 times: Dr Seuss’s first book To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street was rejected by 27 different publishers.

10,000 ways: Thomas Edison said “If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.

Certainly makes one rethink the definition of a failure. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

Be impressed...

Don’t be impressed by money, followers, degrees and titles. Be impressed by kindness, integrity, humility, and generosity.

— e-Buddhism.com

My favourite therapist says our ego’s like bigger, better, more. Our “Inner Child” has completely different needs, such as quality time and attention. For that matter, experts have found that women tend to value time and attention above bobbles and trinkets as well. Just sayin’ :) Hugs.

Being a good person...

Being a good person does not mean you have to put up with other people’s crap.

— Unknown

Unless of course it’s family members/dynamics that you just can’t change. My favourite therapist recommends a form of role play, where you can say everything you need to say without the person actually being there, thus avoiding the potential fall out. For me, it’s been quite a work in progress. Just sayin’ ;) Hugs.

Cause of fatigue...

Our fatigue is often caused not by work but by worry, frustration, and resentment.

— Dale Carnegie

My favourite therapist says we cannot change our legacy. He says we cannot change who our parents are, we cannot change the circumstances of our upbringing and we can only change so much ourselves. We can merely acknowledge and accept the experience and then do our best to manage the triggers we’re left with. Christmas is certainly a reminder of that. Just sayin’ ;) Hugs. XO
